    Sengai Gibon

    Rice Planting

    Biography Sengai Gibon (1750-1837) was a Japanese monk of Rinzai-shu sect, born in Mino (present southern Gifu Prefecture). The 123th chief priest of Shofuku-ji in Hakata, the first Zen temple in Japan. Learned under Gessen Zenne. Drew many ink paintings in Haiga style with spontaneous brush strokes. One of the masters of modern Zen paintings along with Hakuin Ekaku.

Traveled around the country for developing poems and devoted to spread the folk songs and nursery rhymes. Produced many masterpieces such as the poem collections "city and countryside," "unrealizable dreams," the collection of nursery rhymes "Full moon on Jugoya," and the folk songs collection "the Habu Port."

    Uemura Shoen

    Three Umbrellas

    Biography Uemura Shoen(1875-1949) was a remarkable female Japanese-style painter born in Kyoto. Uemura Shoko was her son and Uemura Atsushi was her grandson. Entered the Kyoto Prefectural Painting School and studied under Suzuki Shonen of Shijo school. Later learned under Kono Bairei and Takeuchi Seiho. Also famous for the first female painter that received the Order of Culture.
